All students are welcome to request permissions for classes that are open for enrollment including upper-level and graduate courses, and honors thesis registration. The most common reasons for requesting permission for a Philosophy course are:
- You are an undergraduate student outside of the Philosophy major, looking to take a 3000-level course
- You are an undergraduate student seeking to take a graduate level course
- You are a Philosophy major seeking Honors through the 5000-level option
Independent Studies do not require a Permission Request through the Course Search function in Path@Penn. To learn more, please see our Independent Studies webpage. In order to request a permit, you must: Step 1: Contact the instructor of the course and obtain permission for the course. The student should copy the Undergraduate Coordinator on the email asking for permission. Step 2: If the instructor grants permission for the course, students should then utilize the Permissions Request function in Course Search via Path@Penn. when submitting a permission, please put in the Notes field when you received permission from the instructor. If you are looking to enroll in a course that is at maximum enrollment, please reach out to the Undergraduate Coordinator, Giulia Dunn (giuldunn@sas.upenn.edu) and the instructor of the course, to see if there is a waitlist. Waitlists are managed at the discretion of the instructor for each class. Please note, due to the scarcity of classrooms available, the College of Arts and Sciences does not allow departments to provide permits to students requesting classes that are enrolled at classroom capacity. The department will begin reviewing permissions requests after the Advanced Registration Period ends. If you have questions pertaining to course availability or the permissions process, please contact the Undergraduate Coordinator (giuldunn@sas.upenn.edu) If you need to make an advising appointment, please sign up HERE.
