This lecture will pair texts by classic philosophers in the Western tradition with more recent discussions of the same topics in an effort to identify some of the profound commonalities between them. So, for example, we will look at Plato's suggestion that the soul is composed of several parts in light of contemporary research on faculty psychology, Aristotle's discussion of habit in light of contemporary theories of parenting, Epictetus’s writings on human flourishing in light of contemporary work on happiness, and several other examples.
