Visiting Scholars

Information for Prospective Visiting Scholars

The Department of Philosophy regularly grants Visiting Scholar status to Faculty, Post-Doctoral and Graduate Students from other institutions who can contribute to the academic life of the Department and the University through collaborative work with faculty and students, and participation in Departmental events such as colloquia and seminars. To apply for Visiting Scholar status, you must first contact a member of the Department’s standing faculty who is working in an area closely related to your own research, and request that he or she “sponsor” your visit.  A sponsoring faculty member oversees the visit and helps integrate the visiting scholar into academic life at Penn.  A faculty member who would like to sponsor a visiting scholar will propose the visitor for the approval at a meeting of the department faculty. Visiting Scholars will be offered University library privileges, a study space in the Department’s library, and the opportunity to attend Philosophy courses (without credit), but will receive no other institutional support.  Scholars who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents will also have to make their own visa arrangements upon receiving a letter of invitation from Penn Philosophy. International applicants should consult Penn’s Office of International Program website:
